Confusing Software Terms

In the beginning of my software career, I always had trouble in understanding software terminology. It was very tough to hide my innocence in that situation. I hope you will also enjoy them.

Scene1:
My Colleague (working on other project): Hey, do you know Jason?
Me: I know him very well (its Jason Joseph. Onsite Project Manager for my project). I will have a conference with him every week to update my project status. But how come you know him?
Colleague: I am talking about JSON. Its a popular format to send data between applications.
Me: :(

Scene2:
Colleague: Do you know BEANS?
Me: (I literally confused and started thinking - he is not very close to me. We hardly had any conversations earlier. Why he is talking about vegetables) I slowly said, YES I know.
Colleague: Please tell me, how to call them in JSP page.
Me: (I came to know, he is asking something different) What beans you are talking about. I know the BEANS which my mom use to prepare curry in combination with chapati.
Colleague: I am talking about JAVA BEANS which are similar to java classes.
Me: :(

Scene3:
Me: Hey dude, what you are working on right now?
Friend: I am working on ARM.
Me: I think every software engineer will work with arms (I mean hands) not with legs.
Friend: I am not talking about human arm, I am working on ARM architecture which is used in Microprocessors and Micro controllers
Me: :(

There are some other terms which confused me like 'SOLAR', 'MERCURY','RUBY','DOM' etc,. DOM is not what you hear in Diwali, while firing crackers. It is 'Document Object Model'. I think lot of people might have confused with APPLE, WINDOWS when these companies were just start ups.

I dont support Anna Hazare

Entire India except ruling party supports Anna Hazare. Because they will think it may stop them from doing corruption. Even though I dont have any political views, I'm not supporting Anna. You may think whats the problem with me?

Its just because I have a better solution to fight against corruption.

Before fighting with corruption we have to think the origin and culprits of corruption. Everyone loudly says "Politicians are the origin and culprits of corruption. People are always victims of it". Ha, its always easy to blame someone than taking responsibility.

With one principle, I want to explain how Lokpal bill can fail and how my solution will work better than Lokpal bill.

Politicians came from people and elected by people. Technically Politicians are subset of the main set People. As per the rule all the properties of main set will be by default applied to subset. If people are good then obviously politicians will also be good. Even if Lokpal has some department like Lokayukta, nobody will guarantee that members of that department will be clean. Because you are going to appoint some one from PEOPLE, who are already corrupted and doesn't mind to corrupt new department.

So I feel the change should come with in people. We have already corrupted so many DEPARTMENTS like "police", "Courts" etc. Not only departments, we have corrupted many LAWS like "Property Law", "Tax Law". Now enough of creating new departments and laws. We have to start changing ourselves.

When lot of scams came out in 2011, one of my friend started scolding politicians. I asked him, what will you do if you become an MP and you have chance to give contracts(profits worth crores) to your brothers, cousins etc? Will you try to be clean and assign those projects to some one. He is not confident to say 'he will be clean'. Not only him, majority of the Indians can't be clean when they have chance to do corruption and earn money.We will stop corruption individually, then only we can hope for corruption less future.

Steve Jobs - A visionary and creative genius

Even though I'm not a fan of Steve jobs and Apple products, Apple's financial details generated interest in me to read Steve jobs biography written by Walter Isaacson. Today Apple is the biggest company by market capitalization.

I know how people are crazy for iProducts. Somehow, I feel apple products are for girls and the cost is little high for ordinary people. Still Apple products Stand out by their design and freshness.

For all the guys who don't know much about Apple, here are some interesting facts.

1. First commercially successful personal computer to feature mouse and GUI is created by Apple.
2. More than 3 million iPods sold and this is the highest in this kind of products.
3. iPad is the first successful tablet and all other companies following it now.
4. iPhone is the first popular smart phone with touch screen.

  For all that success Apple achieved, Steve Jobs is the guy behind it. He always wanted to create something new & unique but simple.  When I wanted to have successful and unique life, I thought i can learn something from this guy.

Some lessons I learnt from his life are:

1. To become a successful CEO of a IT related company, you don't need to be a good engineer. But you need to have a clear vision and you should hire someone who can do the better job for you.
2. For Steve jobs, any thing less than PERFECT will look like a SHIT. That's why all the Apple products got such a craze in public.
3. He believes a employee should love what they are doing, then only they can produce best results. It should not be like working for salary, appraisals etc. This is the reason every product released by Apple will be marketed with the tag  "The most AMAZING product yet"
4. We should not keep so many things at a time in our mind. Complete concentration on one item will produce best results. (Steve jobs once gave this suggestion to Google founder Larry page also)
   

I feel he will inspire me a lot in future to attain my goals and stand out different from ordinary people who leads boring life (My definition of boring life: secure job › marriage › own house › Car › Children education › Children marriage :p).

Understanding the progress

We often hear and we actually feel that "Our generation is making good progress in Education, Health & Living".

But we have to re think: Are we really making progress?

When we talk about progress in Health, we take criteria as,

1. Hospitals are improved
2. We got latest equipment
3. Medicines available everywhere 

But the real criteria for good progress should be

1. Patients count should be reduced

We are improved in count of  Doctors, Equipment & Medicines. Proportionally Patients count also improved (Sometimes you won't find beds, ICU rooms in the hospitals in Bangalore). The real progress in HEALTH is when we see more people HEALTHY not when there are more PATIENTS in the hospitals.

When a patient goes to hospital, doctors making them to come back again and again for years. A hospital should not be ranked GOOD by the equipment & doctors. Doctors should make the patient healthy in such a way that they should not suffer with the same disease again in their life. That's the real PROGRESS we need to achieve.

In case of LIVING, people think we are living luxurious life with computers,mobile phones, live TV etc. But there is a famous quotation which says it all
       " Life was much easier when Apple and Blackberry were just fruits"

And the same applies for education also. Education is teaching physics,computers and management etc. But it is not teaching common sense. People doesn't know what is good and bad. Still educated people are

1. Involving in corruption, 
2. Fighting for caste, religions & reservations
3. Allowing bad politicians to rule us
4. Committing suicides to escape from the pressure given by life

When people cannot live happy life then what progress we made?

Life is boring when you don't have a problem

On the first thought you may think Title is TYPO. Its not. Yes I need some problems in my life which will make my life challenging and interesting. If I have everything with me, I will enjoy them within 1 year and that's all. After that I don't know what to do with rest of my life.

The winning satisfaction will be enjoyed only when u struggle more. Sometimes you may enjoy what ever comes for free but that wont be interesting all the time.

You wont like to eat from your father's money all the time. Some day you will like to earn by yourself and that will give you more satisfaction than the previous one.

Imagine the life where you don't have a fight or argument with spouse, friends or parents. Every happy couple, every happy family will have small n sweet issues. That will make their life interesting

I will be getting salary every month. But some times my account balance become zero and I will be waiting for next month salary. Because of the WAIT, next salary will give me more happiness. These small n sweet problems are always good to have.

Its better to have some problems than a boring life

Proud to be a Cyclist

I don't pollute air
I don't create traffic jams
I don't fall sick often
I don't wait for city buses
I'm a proud cyclist of Bangalore

I don't jump traffic signals
I won't ride my vehicle on foot paths
I won't take the turns or change the lane without signal
I wont ring the bell unnecessarily on the road
I'm a responsible citizen of INDIA

And Finally,
Cycling is not pain
Cycling is good
Cycling is fun
Cycling is healthy

Being careless

My friends and parents always said and keep saying that: I am a careless guy. But if you watch me closely or I can say deeply into my life I AM NOT CARELESS, I just care DIFFERENT things than what everyone cares.

So what everyone cares? Job, Family, Social status, Money, Life in Future . I can say these are the high priorities for common people. So What I care for?

1. I care for Myself.
2. I care for my happiness.
3. I care for my health.
4. I care for nature.
5. I care for better tomorrow.
6. I care for good change.

 At a very young age I realized Money wont give complete happiness. You can read more in my very old post "Money and Happiness".

My health is my highest priority. I hate it when I'm lying on the hospital bed and people around me are worried about my health condition. I probably die committing suicide, if I'm in such situation. I want to live healthy and stay healthy till my last breathe.

I feel "Cycling to office" is the solution for pollution free environment. I started it and continuing it from past one year.

I feel more happy, when I play in rain more than when my bank balance crossed more than Rs.50,000. Money is not permanent. My bank balance always become zero by month end.

I believe "Rules are made to follow". I generally follow basic rules and I kept some difficult rules to myself for betterment. I always ask one question to myself: "As an Educated person If I'm breaking rules, then what is the purpose of my education?".

Girls always wants a guy, who cares them more and sometimes expects the guy should care only them and nothing else in the world. But I'm not that kind of a guy and never wanted to be like that. So I decided not to marry and be What I'm today.

Counting 1000 idiots in one hour

On my way to home from Office, I thought of having some time pass on the road. So I decided to count IDIOTS on the road. I got more than 1000 idiots in less than a hour. Of course, Traffic signal is the best place to find idiots.
The criteria to decide someone as idiot are:

1. Who will ride their vehicles on the wrong way.
2. Who wont give signal while taking turn.
3. Who will jump traffic signals.
4. Who unnecessarily honks when the signal turns green.
5. Who will stop their vehicle beyond the stop line and stand on the pedestrian crossing. In one signal(Bommanahalli signal, Bangalore), I found around 100 such idiots.
6. Who wont give any signal while changing the lane.
7. Who will go in the wrong lane. When someone has to go straight but they will go in the other lane and create problems for other people.
8. Who will wear helmet only for the sake of traffic constable.
9. Who won't honk or ring the bell while taking turns.
10. A single person driving car, who hates traffic jams. They never think they are the reason for traffic jam. They will occupy four times more space than a Motor biker and six times more space than a cyclist.
11. Bikers who went on the left side of 'city bus' in a bus stop, which created trouble for bus commuters.
12. People who didn't turned off their engines even in 180 seconds signal.

I also consider myself as idiot when I do any of these mistakes. Earlier I was not following traffic rules seriously. But one incident changed my thinking. It taught me how important to follow rules and keep yourself and others secure on the road.

A big IDIOT who hit a young couple who stopped their bike immediately after the signal turned RED. A cab driver on the process of jumping signal did the accident and both husband & wife died in a couple of days. The two small kids aged less than 10 years lost their parents and cab driver gained just THREE MINUTES of time by jumping that signal. A happy family became no family, just for those three minutes.

I hope readers of my blog won't behave like idiots. A little time at the traffic signal is not worth of a life. Drive safe. Live happily.

Crazy idea for pollution control

I was thinking strongly over the weekend for some solution to "pollution control". For understanding pollution, I have noted down following points.

1. I'm not good in chemistry, but still have some idea of CO₂ (Carbon dioxide) & O₂ (Oxygen). They are the chemicals behind polluted air and fresh air.
2. CO₂ is majorly generated by Automobiles, Air conditioners, fridges etc., what we use everyday for convenience and luxury.
3. O₂ will be generated by Trees. Trees have a huge advantage, they not only produce O₂, they also consume CO₂. Its kind of double bonus.

Everybody know the solution now, Plant trees and end pollution . People knows this from years and still nobody is doing that.

I feel there should be a mechanism which will calculate the pollution created by each individual and which will also tell how many trees they have to plant to balance the pollution. And if we can found that mechanism, government can make it mandatory to plant trees to balance their own pollution. People should not ask for an  excuse saying, it is very costly affair to get land in cities for planting trees. Because cars, air conditioners & refrigerators are also costly things.

If it is difficult for people to follow this, companies who manufacture cars, air conditioners & refrigerators can take it as a responsibility and plant trees. They can charge some additional money to customers for this. So where ever they have more sales they have to plant more trees.

Me vs Me to understand God - Part 1

To understand God I want someone to explain me about God. I thought why can't I talk to myself. One "me", "Me-1" will believe there is some power exists and will calls the power as GOD.  Other "me", "Me-2" will think self belief is the powerful thing.
Me-1 : Don't ask me stupid questions like, who is the real god? Jesus, Allah, Shiva, Vishnu etc...
Me-2: Ok Ok I too believe, for the same god people call with different names. Let them call whatever it is but  don't believe that, if you pray to god then god will give you everything whatever you want.
Me-1: what do you mean?
Me-2: In a race, even though all participants want to win and pray to god, only one will win. Its just because that participant is more capable and better than all other participants. To win a race it requires dedication, practice, luck etc., not just praying god.
Me-1: Lot of people say they got dedication, luck by praying god.
Me-2: !!!!
Me-2: If a medical store owner prays god to increase his business, then what god will do? Will god give diseases to all people and increase medical store business?
Me-1: ????
Me 1: There are some people like Sai baba, Gautama Buddha, Guru nanak who lead the life in a beautiful way and spread the love all over the world. It is good to follow their principles.
Me-2: It is always nice to follow good things. But what people are doing? just kept the god in temples and doing all bad things like hatred, cheating, greediness, racism etc., And people says you can't live in this world, if you are good.
Me-1: Its not necessarily to be right what people says as right. God has said something good and told everyone to follow.
Me-2: It is not required that, good things should be said by someone. We are educated. we have common sense. Can't we judge what is good and bad?
 Me-1: Yes. People can't do the things by themselves. Always bad attracts people more than good. So, we need someone to say what is good or bad.
Me-2: If I can think on my own, what is good and bad. Then I don't need any god or priest?
Me-1: May be !!
Me-2: What about Sins, Heaven and Hell ?

My world of inspiration - Part4

Its very tough task to deal with Monotony. I will get bore of job, culture, living place, gadgets. Changing the job, Changing the culture are not the solutions. I want to be consistent. I know, "The results of CONSISTENCY are much better than CHANGE". Improvement will help you to get rid of Monotony.

Its very early to say in my career, but I'm enjoying my job for years. My friends and parents will never understand, why I'm not changing the company. I know the benefits of being Consistent.  I know how to get fun out of the same job. You just have to love, what you are doing.  For all these, my inspiration is none other than Sachin Tendulkar. The Man of consistency.

He owns almost all the records in batting department. Every time he walks into cricket stadium, people will expect something special from him. From past 20 years he is delivering specials and making fans happy. Like every player, he also faced some downs in his career. He challenged all of them with improvement. He improved his batting style, shot selection etc.,  He scored at least one international century every year from 1992 to till date. Who ever raised questions on his form, all of them got the answers from his bat.

Some bowlers thought, they got secret to stop Sachin. But all of their bowling got punished and now all are retired. Still Sachin is playing like a young guy. I didn't see any bowler other than McGrath, who dominated Sachin for a long time. Unfortunately McGrath retired from cricket, otherwise his bowling also would have been assassinated by Sachin.

Sachin's hat is full of valuable feathers: Master blaster, 50 test centuries, 1st double century in ODI, Padma shri, Padma Vibhushan, member of world cup winning team, Highest Man of the Match awards(ODI), highest Man of the Series awards(ODI) ...........(For writing all his achievements, one blog post is definitely not enough :P ).  He is able to achieve all these because of consistency & improvisation.

Questions in my life

We can get right answers in life, only when we have right questions.

Interesting questions I asked myself

1. Why should I love my mother?
2. Will money give happiness?
3. What happens if I don’t pray god?
4. If food and oxygen are the basic necessities of life, then why agriculture is not the best profession to choose?
5. What I’m worth of?
6. The one who can’t become a good son, can he become a good husband?
7.  Why should I limit my love to family, street, city, state, country? Why can't I love every human in the world?
8. Should I fight with a friend for money related issues? Is money more worth than a friend?
9. I will say "I'm proud of being an Indian". Is INDIA proud of having me as a citizen?
   
10. Why should I blame politicians? when I have right to choose leaders and I have responsibility to serve people around me.

Some questions may feel stupid, but no question is a stupid question for me. Every question helps me to lead my life better. And what else I need?

Good boy BAD

Judging the people is not a very easy task. Sometimes a crook also looks nice. Its because we haven't seen all the angles of that guy. This is the reason people will believe politicians and make them ministers, and suffers until next elections.

I can show myself as a good example for this category. I'm virgin - not by intention, but for lack of talent. I have a problem of talking with girls. They are very special creatures for me. They are confused by themselves and they will also confuse me. My virginity doesn't mean that, I don't have sexual intentions on any girl. I'm virgin just physically, not mentally. I will have a new girl everyday in my dreams. Film heroines, models, college girls etc,. are part of my dreams everyday.Since I don't have any physical relationships in the past, we can't say that I will be loyal to the life partner.

A good boy can also turns into bad based on circumstances. A good husband will become bad, if he supports to his mother against wife. A good colleague will become bad, by mistake if they leak any secrets to management. A good player will become bad, if they didn't perform in a very important match.

Good won't remain good always. Bad won't remain bad always. If you love someone, their bad also looks good. At least you can excuse all their BAD. I can see this in friendship. Friends will love others, even though they know bad qualities of other.

Two great decisions of 2010

Great people won't do great things everyday. One great decision of their life may make them great.

I took two such kind of decisions in last year. When I look back, these decisions make me proud,

1. Buying a cycle.
2. Stopped watching pirated movies.
   

After buying cycle, I realized my love on environment and it is increasing gradually. Some people will never understand, what is the happiness in saving environment. You may realize, when your kids suffer with heart problems & breathing problems. I want to give a beautiful world to my future generation and not pollution and diseases.

Movies are not just 2hours entertainment. Its creativity. Can't I pay 100rs for a movie. Can't I spend 6 hours of a month to watch good movie. I'm not a busy person like prime minister of India. There is no problem for me to watch movies in theater. If everyone start watching movies in pirated CDs, soon artists will stop thinking to entertain people. Life without entertainment sucks.

I took decisions and I stood for my principles. Proud for a wonderful year 2010.

Balance in life

Routine - Creative

Security - Risk

Seriousness - Carelessness

Fun - Struggle

Friends are important and family is also equally important for a happy life. We can't have a special moment every day. There should be some routine. we cannot always think about secure life. There should be some risk. We should not eat more than what we are working. There should be some struggle in life, which will make happy moments more happier. We should not be serious about everything in life. Sometimes, we should be like "Take it easy".  We should not spend more than what we earn.

There are some qualities, which should not be balanced with anything.

Love - Hatred

Knowledge - Foolishness

Confidence & Hope - Dis-belief & Fear

Eager - Unenthusiastic

Love, Knowledge, Confidence, Eagerness should be 100% and hatred, Fear, Foolishness, Dis-belief should be 0%.
